I have the same problem. I built two (2) of the Gen IV clocks and neither one will allow me to set the time and date. Electronic engineer here with over 60 years' experience, I can assure that my welding (soldering) is not weak! Something is definitely strange with this latest generation of clocks, I build two of the Gen III models and they both are working fine! I have bought two of these clocks and they look fine and work fine But one of them is not saving the configuration setting so when you move the clock and power off then after repower all settings are gone but time is correct. What can be wrong ?

this is something wrong. check the battery and clock IC pin connection along with the register and soldering

Are there any SMD components in this kit or are they all traditional hole through components?

There are SMD IC's that are pre-soldered on the pcb under the loud speaker, the rest of the components are hole through components.

Using DS3213 RTC module is possible according to the description, but all of them have six pins instead of five. I assume 32 kHz pin isn't needed, but I would like to know for sure.
