The BME688 from Bosch is an all-in-one environmental sensor that measures temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and VOC gases. It communicates via SPI or I2C, making it versatile and easy to integrate. As a successor to the BME680, the BME688 adds a programmable gas-sensor heater for more advanced odor analysis, while maintaining the same hardware. This compact and affordable sensor is ideal for a variety of environmental monitoring applications.

Features:

  1. Measures temperature, humidity, pressure, and VOC gases.
  2. High precision: Humidity (±3%), pressure (±1 hPa), temperature (±1.0°C).
  3. Altimeter functionality with ±1 meter accuracy.
  4. Detects VOCs like ethanol and carbon monoxide.
  5. Programmable heater for advanced odor analysis.
  6. Supports I2C/SPI, compatible with 3.3V and 5V systems.
  7. Stemma QT connector for solder-free setup.

Specifications:
  1. Humidity Accuracy: ±3%
  2. Temperature Accuracy: ±1.0°C
  3. Barometric Pressure Accuracy: ±1 hPa
  4. Altitude Accuracy: ±1 meter or better
  5. VOC Sensor: Metal oxide (MOX) for detecting gases (alcohols, ethanol, carbon monoxide)
  6. Communication Interface: I2C and SPI
  7. Operating Voltage: 3.3V to 5V (on breakout board with regulator)
  8. Heater Programming: Programmable for controlled odor analysis
  9. Calibration Required: For precise measurements, especially VOC detection
  10. Connector Compatibility: Stemma QT (Qwiic-compatible)
  11. Dimensions: Standard 0.100” (2.54mm) pitch headers for breadboard use

Package Includes:

1 x Adafruit BME688 - Temperature, Humidity, Pressure and Gas Sensor

Setup Guide

1
Identify the pins
Locate VCC (power), GND (ground), and data pins (SDA/SCL for I2C, MOSI/MISO for SPI, or TX/RX for UART). Refer to the pinout diagram on the product page.
2
Wire to your microcontroller
Connect VCC to 3.3V or 5V (check the module spec), GND to GND, and data pins to the appropriate GPIO pins on your Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
3
Install libraries
In Arduino IDE, go to Sketch → Include Library → Manage Libraries and search for the sensor library. Install the recommended version.
4
Upload example sketch
Open File → Examples → [library name] → Basic Example. Upload to your board and open Serial Monitor to view output.
5
Calibrate if needed
Some sensors (temperature, humidity, distance) may need a short warm-up period or calibration. Run the calibration sketch if provided.
