The Adafruit TLV320DAC3100 is an I2S DAC designed to deliver clean, excellent-quality stereo audio output through either stereo headphones or a mono speaker. It's particularly well-suited for compact, all-in-one audio projects where an external amplifier isn't needed, thanks to its built-in class-D speaker amplifier. This breakout board supports flexible power options:

it can be powered with 3VDC when using headphones only, or 5VDC when driving a speaker. It interfaces with digital audio sources using I2S (requiring BCLK, WSEL, and DIN signals) and must be configured over I2C for proper audio playback. Microcontroller support is available via libraries for Arduino, CircuitPython, and Python, making it easy to integrate into a wide range of development platforms.

Features:

  1. Audio Output: Stereo headphone output (AC-coupled)
  2. Mono speaker output via built-in class-D amplifier (must connect to speaker, not headphones)
  3. Simultaneous headphone + speaker support
  4. Digital Audio Interface (I2S): Inputs: BCLK, WSEL, DIN
  5. No external MCLK required (uses internal PLL to derive MCLK from BCLK)
  6. Configuration via I2C: Gain control, Output selection (headphone/speaker)
  7. Various configuration options (typically used for 16-bit I2S audio)
  8. Additional Connections: MIC and BIAS: Connects to headset mic (4th pin); supports 2V bias voltage
  9. Detects: Headset plugged in, Headset button press
  10. AIN1 / AIN2: Alternative mix-in inputs (not for I2S)
  11. 1 GPIO pin: Can be used as IRQ line
  12. High-quality DAC with 95 dB SNR; supports 8–192 kHz sample rates
  13. Stereo headphone & mono speaker out (up to 2.5 W into 4 Ω)
  14. Analog inputs (AIN1/2) with mix-in, mic bias, and headset detection
  15. 25 digital audio blocks with filters, DRC, 3D effects, and tone generator
  16. I2C controlled, supports I2S, DSP, TDM; includes PLL and power-down mode

Package Includes:

1 x  Adafruit TLV320DAC3100 - I2S DAC

2  x  16 Pin Connector

Setup Guide

1
Identify the pins
Locate VCC (power), GND (ground), and data pins (SDA/SCL for I2C, MOSI/MISO for SPI, or TX/RX for UART). Refer to the pinout diagram on the product page.
2
Wire to your microcontroller
Connect VCC to 3.3V or 5V (check the module spec), GND to GND, and data pins to the appropriate GPIO pins on your Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
3
Install libraries
In Arduino IDE, go to Sketch → Include Library → Manage Libraries and search for the sensor library. Install the recommended version.
4
Upload example sketch
Open File → Examples → [library name] → Basic Example. Upload to your board and open Serial Monitor to view output.
5
Calibrate if needed
Some sensors (temperature, humidity, distance) may need a short warm-up period or calibration. Run the calibration sketch if provided.
