The Raspberry Pi Build HAT seamlessly bridges the gap between Raspberry Pi’s powerful computing capabilities and LEGO’s modular Technic motors and sensors, offering a perfect platform for robotics enthusiasts and educators. By plugging into the Pi’s GPIO header, it enables you to connect a combination of up to four LEGO Technic-compatible devices via LPF2 ports, such as angular motors, colour sensors, distance sensors, and force sensors. An onboard microcontroller ensures reliable, low-latency communication with these devices, offloading tasks from the main processor so that your Pi can focus on high-level logic and control.

With dedicated Python libraries and robust firmware, interaction with the connected LEGO parts becomes intuitive—allowing developers to write clean, maintainable code for robotics, automation, or educational projects. Power delivery is simplified too: the Build HAT supports external DC input, which — when used with the official Build HAT power supply — can simultaneously power the Pi and all connected motors and sensors. The design prioritizes safety and reliability, featuring protections for overcurrent and proper power regulation, making it ideal for classroom environments and maker labs.

Setup Guide

1
Identify the pins
Locate VCC (power), GND (ground), and data pins (SDA/SCL for I2C, MOSI/MISO for SPI, or TX/RX for UART). Refer to the pinout diagram on the product page.
2
Wire to your microcontroller
Connect VCC to 3.3V or 5V (check the module spec), GND to GND, and data pins to the appropriate GPIO pins on your Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
3
Install libraries
In Arduino IDE, go to Sketch → Include Library → Manage Libraries and search for the sensor library. Install the recommended version.
4
Upload example sketch
Open File → Examples → [library name] → Basic Example. Upload to your board and open Serial Monitor to view output.
5
Calibrate if needed
Some sensors (temperature, humidity, distance) may need a short warm-up period or calibration. Run the calibration sketch if provided.
