The Adafruit EMC2101 I2C PC Fan Controller and Temperature Sensor brings intelligent fan control to your projects with ease, thanks to its seamless STEMMA QT / Qwiic connector system for plug-and-play I2C integration. Built around the Microchip EMC2101 chip, this breakout board allows you to control 3- or 4-pin PC fans using a programmable PWM signal while also monitoring fan speed through its tachometer input. It features both an internal temperature sensor with ±1°C accuracy and support for an external sensing diode, giving you flexible thermal feedback options.

You can even set up a temperature-to-fan-speed curve using a built-in LUT, allowing the board to automatically adjust fan speed based on ambient or remote temperatures. Whether you're cooling a Raspberry Pi enclosure, building a quiet electronics project, or retrofitting an existing device, this board helps you manage airflow efficiently and quietly—no extra code or components needed.

Features:

  1. The EMC2101 is a smart fan controller for 3- and 4-pin PC fans.
  2. It provides a programmable PWM output to control fan speed.
  3. It includes a tachometer input to monitor fan speed feedback.
  4. Built-in internal temperature sensor with ±1°C accuracy.
  5. Supports external temperature sensing via a diode input.
  6. Allows configuration of a temperature-to-fan-speed LUT (Lookup Table).
  7. Automatically adjusts fan speed based on temperature readings.
  8. Communicates over standard I2C, easy to interface with microcontrollers.
  9. Helps reduce fan noise by lowering speed during light thermal loads.
  10. Useful for DIY electronics, PC mods, repairs, or quieting noisy fans.
  11. Small, efficient, and easy to integrate into compact systems.
  12. Eliminates the need for custom PWM generation or tach monitoring in firmware.

Package Includes:

Setup Guide

1
Identify the pins
Locate VCC (power), GND (ground), and data pins (SDA/SCL for I2C, MOSI/MISO for SPI, or TX/RX for UART). Refer to the pinout diagram on the product page.
2
Wire to your microcontroller
Connect VCC to 3.3V or 5V (check the module spec), GND to GND, and data pins to the appropriate GPIO pins on your Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
3
Install libraries
In Arduino IDE, go to Sketch → Include Library → Manage Libraries and search for the sensor library. Install the recommended version.
4
Upload example sketch
Open File → Examples → [library name] → Basic Example. Upload to your board and open Serial Monitor to view output.
5
Calibrate if needed
Some sensors (temperature, humidity, distance) may need a short warm-up period or calibration. Run the calibration sketch if provided.
